How to calculate the landed cost of an imported car in Algeria

The formula

Landed cost (DA) = purchase price × exchange rate
                 + freight and transport
                 + customs and duties
                 + port fees

Every item must be in dinars before it is added. The purchase price is often in euros (Europe), dollars or yuan (China): the exchange rate converts it.

Worked example

ItemAmount
Purchase price€8,500
Exchange rate applied× 274
Purchase price in dinars2,329,000 DA
Freight and transport180,000 DA
Customs and duties310,000 DA
Port fees45,000 DA
Landed cost2,864,000 DA

These amounts are illustrative: replace them with your own figures. Set the selling price from this total cost, not from the converted purchase price alone — here the difference is 535,000 DA.

The most common mistakes

  • Using today's rate instead of the rate actually paid on the transfer.
  • Forgetting port fees or handling fees — small on their own, but on every car.
  • Splitting the container wrongly: dividing the rent by the total number of places when some were sold to another importer.
  • Recalculating afterwards: if the rate or freight changes after the sale, the cost of a car already sold should not move.

Splitting a container's costs

When several cars travel in the same container, each car's freight share is:

Share per car = (container rent + shared fees
− agreed price of places sold to others)
÷ number of your non-cancelled cars

Example: a container rented for 600,000 DA with 60,000 DA of shared fees, one place sold for 150,000 DA to another importer, and 3 of your cars on board: (600,000 + 60,000 − 150,000) ÷ 3 = 170,000 DA per car.

Doing it automatically with Showroom213

In Showroom213 (Pro and Business plans), you enter the purchase price in its currency and the rate applied, then freight, customs and port fees. The landed cost is calculated on the car's record. If the car is linked to a container, its freight share is calculated with the rule above, then frozen when the container is closed.

To track the container itself to the port, read Tracking car import containers.

To run the numbers with your own figures, in DA or in millions, use the free landed cost calculator.

Frequently asked questions

Which exchange rate should I use?
The rate actually applied when the money was transferred for that car, not today's rate. Showroom213 keeps the rate entered on each car, so its cost doesn't change when the rate moves later.
Where can I find the customs rates that apply?
Duties and taxes depend on the vehicle and the regulations in force. Check them with your freight forwarder or Algerian customs; this guide deliberately gives no rates.
How do I split the price of a shared container?
Add the container rent and shared fees, subtract what other importers paid you for their places, then divide by the number of your non-cancelled cars in the container.
